Issues

I am running for the Putnam County Legislature in District 5 because the people of this County deserve better.  They deserve someone who will listen to their concerns and look out for their interests.  People are leaving the County primarily because of the tax burden placed upon them.  Yet, the Legislature continues to spend with abandon - on Tilly Foster Farm, the Putnam County Golf Course and on the salaries of elected officials - some to obscene levels.  In 2017, the Legislature voted to give themselves 14% raises for 2018.  14%!  Just unconscionable!!  In 2020, the majority of the Legislature voted themselves another raise while cutting $108,000 from the Sheriff's Department for road and river patrols!

Professionalism

  • Professional behavior is a must! Legislators must treat elected officials and citizens who wish to engage with our government with respect.
  • Hiring practices must improve. All positions should be filled in a timely manner by the best qualified candidate, who must be properly vetted and paid competitively.
Fiscal Responsibility
  • Tax dollars must be spent more wisely!
  • Salaries should be in keeping with those in surrounding counties. Certain positions in Putnam County government are grossly overpaid, while others are underpaid.
  • Staffing must be realistic. For example, the historic understaffing of the Sheriff’s Department has led to an expensive over-reliance on overtime.
  • Priorities must be analyzed more carefully: we should not be spending tax dollars on fancy horses at Tilly Foster when our roads need repair and our lakes need protection.
  • Competitive bidding must be the norm. It’s time to stop cronyism and carelessness.

Open Government

  • Backroom decisions must end! The Republican legislators should not make policy decisions while they caucus, depriving elected Democrats of essential information and the opportunity to participate.
  • Citizens must be given a voice in our County government. They should always have the opportunity to address the Legislature and share their concerns about our County.
  • All meetings should be televised so the public knows what the Legislature is doing.

Our Environment

  • The Climate Smart commitment needs more than lip service – it needs action!
  • Hire a qualified Environmental Planner – the position has been vacant for over a year.
  • Protect our waterways. Our streams, lakes and ponds are one of our greatest assets. The County has a responsibility to provide good stewardship in order to assure healthy drinking water and provide recreational opportunities.
